It has been reported that Rangers are ‘keeping close tabs’ on the 25-year-old winger, who spent the 2019-20 campaign on loan at Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship in England.
Rangers boss Gerrard is ‘an admirer’ of the former Norwich City winger, and Newcastle are open to offers for him, according to the report.
The report has added that although Murphy is not a priority transfer target this summer, if Gerrard can move on Jordan Jones, Jamie Murphy, Brandon Barker or Greg Stewart, then he would look into the possibility of bringing him to Ibrox.
Stats
Murphy made 24 starts and 15 substitute appearances in the Championship for Wednesday during the 2019-20 campaign, scoring nine goals and providing four assists in the process, according to WhoScored.
Wednesday manager Garry Monk raved about the 25-year-old in July, telling YorkshireLive that “he’s improving and has improved throughout the season”, and added that he would like the winger to be part of his team in 2020-21 as well.
Too expensive for Rangers?
According to The Daily Record, Newcastle paid Norwich City £12 million in 2017 for Murphy, and it is unlikely that the Magpies will sell him for a huge loss.
It is hard to see the Gers cough up £12m on a winger they may not actually need, and Newcastle may not be willing to send him out on loan again.
