Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers have a manager who understands the club.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Steven Gerrard has admitted to Rangers TV that he felt the club was “a bit disjointed” last season.

The Gers wound up finishing a disappointing third in the Scottish Premiership under interim boss Graeme Murty, who replaced axed Pedro Caixinha back in October.

A number of Caixinha’s pre-season recruits failed to justify their places – and prices – at Ibrox and the writing had been on the wall for the Portuguese manager for a while.

Gerrard was appointed as Murty’s successor last month, and the legendary midfielder is bringing his Gers side to a training camp in Spain this week.

The 38-year-old told Rangers TV: “More importantly, it is to live together and for the players to get used to the staff and the staff to get used to the players and we start this team bonding and the camaraderie and we get the squad in a good place.

“Looking in from afar last year, it looked a bit disjointed and we can’t have that here at a football club this size. Everyone has to be singing off the same hymn sheet and we start building that from the first day in Spain.”

Gerrard gets it

Rangers fans are likely to be buoyed by Gerrard saying “we can’t have that here at a football club this size”.

Early days, but already it looks like the Liverpool icon has a very clear understanding of the club – and those comments prove it.

One could argue that Caixinha did not understand how big the Gers were, which is why he spent a lot of money on some players who were simply nowhere near good enough.

But Gerrard is obviously under no illusions of what is required at Ibrox and therefore he is unlikely to underestimate the job by taking expensive risks, as Caixinha perhaps did.

Rangers have signed six players so far and five of those are British, which doesn’t necessarily mean they are better than foreign imports, but it does mean that they are likely to know how big the Blues are and the importance of beating Celtic for instance.
