Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has spoken highly of young Ibrox striker Dapo Mebude, as quoted in The Scottish Sun.

Gerrard has also revealed that Rangers have recalled Mebude from Scotland youth duty, and that the 17-year-old striker has been drafted into the squad for this weekend’s Scottish Premiership match against St Johnstone.

Star striker Alfredo Morelos is suspended for the game, while Jermain Defoe and Kyle Lafferty have hamstring and calf problems respectively.

Gerrard told The Scottish Sun about Mebude: “I think young Dapo has a huge future, he has big potential.

“He is probably not ready to be thrown into the deep end just yet but I think he will be ready for a cameo. There is no doubt about it, he will play for Rangers at some point.”

Big ask

Mebude is only 17 years of age, and it will take the young striker a fair few years to establish himself in the Rangers first team.

One should not expect the Scottish youngster to make a huge impact against St. Johnstone, but it will help the teenager in his development and will give him a taste of what’s to come in his career.

Rangers are second in the Scottish Premiership table at the moment with 51 points from 25 matches, six points behind leaders and bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic.
