Rangers manager linked with next step after Ibrox.
Steven Gerrard has had a mixed start as Rangers boss since being appointed at Ibrox last summer.
There have however been enough positives that Gerrard is being touted for another job when his Rangers spell comes to a close.
The Scottish Sun report Gerrard has been shortlisted as an eventual successor to Gareth Southgate.
There is no immediate reason for Rangers to worry, with Southgate still popular with players, fans and media.
It makes sense for the FA to consider Gerrard. He is a young up and coming English boss who has shown willingness to put faith in young players.
However if there is anybody who knows the difficulty of the job he would be walking into, it’s Gerrard.
Gerrard was part of England’s ‘golden generation’, who failed to win a big tournament, or get close.
He worked under Sven Goran Eriksson, Fabio Capello, Steve McClaren and Roy Hodgson, and saw the job chew them up and spit them out.
McClaren’s career in particular has never recovered.
Gerrard should have seen enough to put him off. Even if the job vacancy was made available tomorrow, he would be mad to walk out on Rangers for an even bigger risk.
