Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is pushing ahead with his plan to wrestle the Scottish title from Celtic’s grasp in his first season in charge.

Entering 2019, Rangers are in a strong position, level on points with Celtic despite their rivals’ game in hand.

Momentum is on Rangers’ side after the 1-0 Old Firm win at Ibrox, and Steven Gerrard is pushing ahead to capitalise in the transfer market.

Rangers have already completed loan deals to sign Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis.

The duo have proven track records, and will relish being plunged into the heat of a title battle.

Neither player are likely to wilt amid the pressure, and that is what Gerrard quickly seems to have figured out.

For Rangers to stand a chance of toppling Celtic, Rangers need men, not boys.

Loan players like Sean Goss and Ovie Ejaria have flashed talent, during their stints in 2018, but were quickly found out. They did not last.

Defoe and Davis join a side packed with experience through the spine of the team, from goalkeeper Allan McGregor, to defenders Connor Goldson and Gareth McAuley, to midfielder Scott Arfield

Gerrard has to strike a balance, and he is looking to the future too with summer deals completed for Jordan Jones and Glen Kamara, two players in their 20s.

For this season, Gerrard has figured out that senior players, leaders, are required to raise the standard and drive the team forward.

Getting over the line will be tough, but Rangers are in a better position than ever before since their promotion.
