Steven Gerrard of Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers could reportedly play Glenn Middleton up front.
It looks like Rangers boss Steven Gerrard might have a trick up his sleeve.
Gerrard is without Kyle Lafferty and Jermain Defoe through injury for this afternoon’s visit of St Johnstone, while Alfredo Morelos is suspended.
That means the Rangers manager is effectively without a recognised striker but, according to The Scottish Sun, Glenn Middleton could take up a number nine role.
And if this works, it could be a masterstroke by the 37-year-old.
Middleton is a very exciting young winger but his prospects of playing on the left-hand side of attack could look very bleak in a few months.
Gerrard already has Jamie Murphy for that role and if he signs Ryan Kent permanently, it’s bad news for Middleton.
But if Gerrard can transform the 19-year-old into a makeshift striker then there’s much more chance of him playing fairly regularly, even as a plan-b option.
Defoe is 36 and Morelos might not be there beyond the summer. Going forward, the Gers will need an excellent, young striker and it’ll be fascinating to see if Middleton could be it.
