Docherty joined Shrewsbury in League One in England on loan from Rangers in the summer transfer window.
Rangers manager Gerrard has suggested that he will let the youngster carry on playing for Shrewsbury, but the Liverpool legend has admitted that he is torn over the matter of recalling the 22-year-old midfielder – who joined the Gers from Hamilton Academical in January 2018 for a transfer fee reported by The Sunday Post to be worth £500,000.
Gerrard told The Scottish Sun about Docherty: “It’s a tough decision that one. We love Greg as a person and as a player.
“He’s very young, and it’s a difficult one to judge what is the next best step for him because he’s enjoying his football and he’s getting regular games.
“From a selfish point of view, I could drag him back and have him here just to suit me but I’ve got to think about the kid and his future and what is going to make him grow the quickest to be available for Rangers on a more consistent basis.
“We need to make the best decision that is going to help him long-term, rather than just what suits Steven Gerrard for a short-term fix.”
No Rangers recall
Docherty has been playing regularly for Sam Ricketts’s side this season and has established himself as an important player in the team.
According to Transfermarkt.com, the 22-year-old midfielder has scored four goals and providing two assists in 17 League One appearances for the Shrews so far this season.
Given the progress that the youngster is making in England, it would make sense for Rangers to carry on playing for Shrewsbury.
