Rangers boss must offload Martyn Waghorn and sign 18-goal star

Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers should take another look at Louis Moult before it’s too late.

Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson has told The Glasgow Evening Times he is hopeful that reported Rangers target Louis Moult will sign a new deal with the club.

Robinson said to The GET on Sunday: “I’ve had a couple of conversations about Louis but there hasn’t been any offers at this stage. I’m very hopeful he’ll be with us. We’ve offered him a new contract, we’re negotiating with him and we’re hopeful that he’ll stay.

“We can’t pay what other teams can pay, we know that. The fans adore him, he’s been brilliant for the club but the football club’s been brilliant for him – we’ve given him a platform to play on.

The Scottish Sun reported in May that Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha “desperately” wanted the 25-year-old striker at Ibrox, but the trail has gone cold since the Portuguese brought in two hitmen in the form of Alfredo Morelos and Eduardo Herrera.

And Caixinha should make a late move for him before it’s too late, in spite of recent additions.

Rangers have four strikers on the books, but Martyn Waghorn, who scored seven times in 32 Premiership appearances last term, has proven himself rather ineffective at this level and although Kenny Miller remains a fine centre-forward, he is 37 and won’t be around forever.

Even at his age, Miller, with 11 goals, was the Gers’ top goalscorer last term. Moult, on the other hand, scored 18 and Caixinha would be wise to bring in a proven talisman at this level.

Herrera and Morelos may be class, but the reality is they have zero experience of Scottish football.

If Waghorn – who scored 20 Championship goals two years ago – struggled with the step-up in class, would Rangers fans put the mortgage on the new boys doing the business?

Few would be surrpised to see Waghorn leave Ibrox this summer. If he is not in the manager’s plans then Caixinha needs to offload him as soon as possible and make his move for Moult.

Rangers, who finished third and 39 points behind Celtic, only scored eight more goals than seventh-placed Ross County – and 50 less than Brendan Rodgers’s side.

There is a huge gap between both Old Firm sides at the moment and the Gers won’t bridge it without some serious firepower. Will Morelos, Herrera and Miller provide it? Perhaps, but there’s no guarantees, and adding Moult – who has 35 goals in two seasons for Motherwell – can only be a good thing for Rangers.
