Glasgow Rangers defender James Tavernier was linked with Sunderland and Reading in January, but the Ibrox defender could sign a new Gers contract, suggests Graeme Murty.

The former Newcastle United right-back joined Rangers from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2015 for a transfer fee reported by The Daily Mail to be worth £200,000 and when Mark Warburton was the Gers manager and is out of contract in the summer of 2019, according to The Scottish Sun.
Murty has also claimed that Tavernier is the best right-back in Scotland at the moment.
“There are ongoing discussions with James,” Murty told The Scottish Sun. “As far as I am aware he loves it here.
“I actually had a chat with him about full backs in England and the manner in which they approach training and their life. I personally think he is the best right back in the country.”

Good move
Tavernier is one of the best right-backs in the Scottish Premiership and is a key figure in the current Rangers team.
The former Newcastle and Wigan defender is playing well at the moment, and his performances for the Gers since 2015 have been good enough to merit a new deal.

Missed chance for Sunderland and Reading?
Tavernier was linked with moves to Sunderland and Reading in the Championship in England in the January transfer window.
The Daily Mail reported of Sunderland and Reading’s interest in the 26-year-old right-back, but following Murty’s comments, it seems that the Black Cats and the Royals may have missed their chance to secure the services of the defender.
