Nobody needed more evidence that Rangers are miles ahead of Celtic at the moment.

But Steven Gerrard’s side offered another demonstration on Sunday anyway by beating 10-man Celtic 4-1 at Ibrox.

The win now gives Rangers a 23-point gap over their Old Firm rivals in the Scottish Premiership, which they were crowned champions of already.

This summer is massive for Celtic and lord knows there’s a lot to do.

Peter Lawwell is leaving his role as chief executive, Scott Brown is vacating the captaincy and leaving the club and the fact that there’s not even a manager appointed yet will worry some fans.

Oh, and there’s the small matter of rebuilding the squad and improving the team enough to properly challenge Rangers next season.

And although Gerrard is expecting a reaction from ‘across the road’ in Glasgow, he claims that he and director of football Ross Wilson are preparing for Celtic’s hopeful backlash by making the light Blues even better.

He told The Scottish Sun: “What happens across the road is not really my business. But we’re certainly aware of what’s going on over there and what type of reaction that side will be looking for. We’ll always respect that and prepare for it.

“At Rangers recruitment never stops. My job and Ross Wilson’s job with the scouting network is to identify players who can help this group because in year four it’s key we have new faces who can energise not just us but the fans and everyone connected with the club. So yes we will be striving to get better.”

Can Rangers get better? Well it’s a worrying prospect for Celtic, but yes, they can and probably will get much better and it’s so difficult to see the Bhoys stopping them anytime soon.

That being said, it looked like Celtic would dominate Scottish football for a lot longer than they did when Brendan Rodgers was in charge and once he left two years ago, things slowly but surely started to unravel.

Nobody is saying that Gerrard will walk out on Rangers but the more speculation there is about a return down South, the more tempting it’ll be and that might just bring about the same reset that happened at Parkhead when Rodgers left.
