Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has confirmed the injury blow that has kept Scott Wright out of this afternoon’s side to face Ross County in the Scottish Premiership – and revealed Jon McLaughlin has also picked up a knock.
Wright’s injury was initially confirmed by Mick Beale yesterday before Gerrard gave an update ahead of this afternoon’s game in the Highlands.
The Rangers boss admitted that ‘little setbacks’ like the injuries to Wright and McLaughlin are part of why he likes having a big squad as he looked ahead to facing the Staggies.
“Scott Wright’s obviously got a knock, unfortunately, he couldn’t make the trip,” Gerrard told Rangers TV.
Jon McLaughlin as well. so they are two blows for us. Thankfully I’ve got good options in Scott Wright’s area and I’ve got good options in goal as well.
That’s the reason I like a big squad. When you get little setbacks like that you’ve got enough cover to make up for it.”
With a trip to Armenia to face Alashkert on Thursday before the first Old Firm game of the season against Celtic, Rangers will be hoping Wright is back quickly.
Losing the former Aberdeen star for both games would be a massive blow and really reduce the options available to Gerrard.
Wright has started the season really well after bedding in at Ibrox over the final months of last season and he’ll be desperate to get back into the side as quickly as possible once he returns.
McLaughlin has played regularly in the domestic games this season so far so the timing of his injury couldn’t be worse for him either.
Gerrard is unlikely to chop and change over the next few games so his chance to play himself into an Old Firm start looks to have totally disappeared.
