Borna Barisic has revealed to Croatian publication Sportske Novosti that he sought the advice of Nikica Jelavic and Niko Kranjcar before joining Rangers last summer.

The Croatia international, who has four caps for his country, joined the Gers in a £2.2 million deal [The Record] from Osijek back in August.

Some high-profile Croatian stars have graced Ibrox down the years, with Jelavic using a brilliant spell in Glasgow as a stepping stone toward a successful Premier League career, while Kranjcar had a mixed time and saw his two-year Rangers career blighted by injury.

Steven Gerrard’s side have been brilliant this season, but they could potentially go from second in the Premiership table to joint-third with Kilmarnock tomorrow night if certain results go against them – a fact which illustrates that Scotland’s top flight isn’t as dominated by the Old Firm sides any longer.

Here is what Barisic was told by his compatriots, prior to moving to Ibrox.

“We have good players, but to win the league will take time because the league is stronger than it used to be,” he told Sportske Novosti.

“I spoke to Nikica Jelavic and Niko Kranjcar who played here and they said there is only Rangers and Celtic in the league. But now there are other teams who are close to us.”

On the flip side, the light Blues could move three points behind top-of-the-table Celtic if they beat third-placed Aberdeen at Pittodrie and Brendan Rodgers’s side lose to Hibernian.

Barisic is right in saying that the also-rans in Scotland have been improving as of late, to the point where victory is anything but guaranteed for the Gers tomorrow.
