Joe Rothwell has been linked with a move to Rangers – and he appears to have confirmed that he is leaving Blackburn Rovers this summer.

TEAMtalk reported back in October that Rangers were confident of signing Rothwell on a free transfer.

A pre-contract agreement was suggested for January but that didn’t happen as Rangers only gave a pre-contract deal to defender John Souttar.

You could maybe say that Rangers changed their stance after Steven Gerrard’s departure.

Yet with Ross Wilson leading the transfers at Rangers and not necessarily the manager, you can imagine that Rothwell is still on the Ibrox wish list.

Amad Diallo will be heading back to Manchester United this summer so adding another wide player with real dribbling ability would be ideal.

Rothwell can also play centrally, offering creativity as a number 10 – and he has been hailed as an ‘amazing’ dribbler by Tony Mowbray.

The 27-year-old is a former Manchester United talent and has shown his ability in the final third with three goals and 10 assists this season.

Rothwell may have been keeping his options open in January but there is now a real opportunity for Rangers to strike.

Blackburn played their final game of the season on Saturday afternoon as they beat Birmingham City 2-1 at St Andrews.

Rothwell took to Instagram after the game to state that his four years at Blackburn have come to an end.

Rothwell thanked everybody at Blackburn as he confirmed that he will be leaving Ewood Park with his contract almost over.

Championship clubs are bound to be interested in signing Rothwell on a free transfer but keep a close eye on Rangers in this transfer race.

Wilson loves a free transfer like Fashion Sakala, John Lundstram, Nnamdi Ofoborh, Leon Balogun and Jon McLaughlin, so don’t be shocked if he rekindles that move for Rothwell.
