Rangers are close to signing a player Newcastle reportedly wanted last year.

Rangers are set to sign Sweden international defender Filip Helander, report Goal.
The Gers are set to pay around £4 million for the centre-back.
Steven Gerrard’s latest coup shows once again how Newcastle have been caught napping this summer in the transfer market.
Newcastle are currently without a manager, having made no signings, with less than a month to go until the transfer deadline.
The Express reported last September that Rafa Benitez had identified Helander as a future Newcastle signing.
The problem was that Helander had only just signed a new three-year deal at Bologna last August.

This made a January move highly unlikely, while Newcastle spent the funds they did have on Almiron.
Over the past fortnight, Helander has been linked with a move away from Bologna.
On June 27 Tuttomercatoweb reported there had been an approach from Turkish side Basaksehir.
In the following fortnight, this would have been the time for Newcastle to make their move.
Rangers have used that time to move in, and seemingly secure a deal for the Swede.
Newcastle, well, who knows.
