Rangers winger Barrie McKay has admitted to The Scottish Sun that he wanted to prove a point to manager Pedro Caixinha in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Partick Thistle.

Having been thrashed 5-1 by Old Firm rivals Celtic last week, it was imperative that Rangers responded against another Glasgow rival, as they made the short trip to take on Partick Thistle at Firhill Stadium.

However, Caixinha’s men were disappointing for 80 minutes, and were up against it for the majority of the match after Kris Doolan had headed the hosts in front.

Rangers did eventually hit back though, as Barrie McKay equalised with seven minutes to play, before Joe Garner headed in a dramatic late winner to give Rangers all three points in a 3-1 victory.

The result sends Rangers into the Europa League, and they had winger McKay to thank for making a real impact on the game, swinging the balance in Rangers’ favour in the dying stages.

The Scotland international, 22, has become something of a contract rebel at Ibrox having turned down a new deal to stay with the club in April (Daily Mail), leaving Rangers to consider selling him this summer before he walks away in 2018.

McKay hasn’t been in the starting line-up of late, and after making a huge impression against Partick Thistle, he admitted to The Scottish Sun that he wanted to prove a point to manager Caixinha.

McKay didn’t though guarantee that he would be staying, noting that everybody wants to prove their quality to new manager Caixinha, and his current task is to get himself back in the team.

“Yeah a little bit,” said McKay. “Obviously every player wants to be starting the game from the start and that’s my task – to get myself back in the team. I think every player here needs to earn the shirt. We want to play under the new manager so I think that’s up to them to do that,” he added.

Do you think McKay will stay at Ibrox?
