Rangers bargain? Arsene Wenger reportedly tried to sign Umar Sadiq in 2016

Reported Glasgow Rangers strike target Umar Sadiq was an alleged target for Arsene Wenger.

Rangers might just be onto a bargain amid the Scottish Sun’s report they are trying to sign Umar Sadiq.

Gers boss Steven Gerrard is reportedly following Arsene Wenger, who was linked with a move for Sadiq two years ago.

Sadiq’s agent Mohammed Lawal told allnigeriasoccer.com that talks had been initiated to try and bring the promising striker to Arsenal.

He said: “Yes, there is interest from Arsenal but at this moment nothing is done. Contact was made with Roma so we will see where it takes us in the next few days/weeks.”

The Metro reported that Arsenal had a bid of £10 million rejected for the forward, with Roma holding out for a higher fee.

This high asking price helped lead to Arsenal shelving their interest, but now Rangers could bag a bargain.

Sadiq has struggled to break through at Roma, and while this has led to Arsenal and other linked English Premier League sides taking a step back, Rangers are now open to a move.

He was sent out on loan to NAC Breda in Holland last season and the 21-year-old could benefit from a fresh start at Ibrox.

NBC Sport reported in 2016 how Roma president James Palotta namechecked Sadiq as one of the young players he had high hopes for.

It hasn’t quite worked out since, but he is still young enough to turn his fortunes around.

A move to Arsenal likely also would have been too much too soon, and signing for Rangers now could be worth the wait.
