Rangers striker Tony Weston got on the scoresheet as the Gers B team beat Albion Rovers 3-1 to continue their preparations for their debut Lowland League campaign and the former Blackpool kid is “buzzing” ahead of the Gers starting the season against Bo’ness United in just over a week.

Goals from Weston, Alex Lowry and Aaron Lyall, sealed a comeback win for the Light Blues against the League Two side and the teenager is expecting a big challenge in the fifth tier.

After moving to Ibrox little over a year ago, Weston insists the Gers’ entering the Lowland League is “more real” than the CAS under-18 league with the Rangers kids facing senior pros rather than other Academy sides.

“I have done a lot of work back home so I have come back fit and strong and I am just raring to go and play more games,” Weston told Rangers TV.

“All the lads are buzzing for the start of the league, it is more real than any other league we have been in, especially for me because I’ve only been here for a year so it is going to be a big challenge for us and we hope to push on.”

Lowland League will be an exciting challenge for Rangers B

With David McCallum and Brian Gilmour’s side also competing in the Challenge Cup and the UEFA Youth League this season, there is plenty on offer for the young Rangers stars.

The chance to play senior pros every week should really help them kick on in their development and push the Rangers youngsters closer to a place in Steven Gerrard’s first-team plans at Ibrox.

For someone like Weston, scoring goals regularly in the fifth tier could rapidly accelerate his progress and see him rubbing shoulders with the likes of Jermain Defoe, Steven Davis and Allan McGregor before too long.
