Rangers defender Leon King King is delighted with the performance of the B team in their historic Lowland League victory over Bo’ness United yesterday – and thinks the young Gers can take confidence going into Tuesday’s game with Spartans in Edinburgh.
Goals from Tony Weston and Robbie Ure sealed a debut win for the young Rangers B team, putting in a resolute display against the experienced Bo’ness side before eventually breaking the deadlock in the second half.
King believes the patience shown by the Colts played a massive part in eventually securing the win, and is looking to use his own experience to help the others in the squad who have yet to really taste senior football.
“When we were coming into the game we knew it would be tough and we knew that they would be direct but I think the team handled it very well and when they did try and play through us we managed to match that as well,” King told Rangers TV.
“The message at half-time was just to calm down because we would eventually get the chances to score and they came along later in the game.
“It is always good to stay patient because there’s no point in getting frustrated with ourselves because it is only going to impact us, it isn’t really going to impact the other team so we just need to be patient.”
“It is always good to keep a clean sheet especially against senior teams and if we keep that going for the rest of the season I’m sure we will be alright.
“I’ve just been trying to help the lads that haven’t experienced this side of the men’s game but I am still learning myself so I am just trying to take every game as it comes.
“It should be a good test on Tuesday obviously with a different surface as well so we just need to make sure we are up for it like we were today.”
Fantastic start for Rangers B as they look to make more history
Rangers B taking their place in a senior division is the culmination of years of hard work behind the scenes at the Gers – but it is hopefully only the beginning for them.
An opening day win is a fantastic start for Rangers – particularly with Celtic losing – but the Colts won’t have it all their own way this season.
Whether Rangers can put together a title challenge – potentially putting pressure on the SPFL to admit them – is anyone’s guess just now.
There is plenty of talent in David McCallum and Brian Gilmour’s squad but their lack of experience will hurt them at times this season.
That isn’t a bad thing though and is exactly the purpose behind the Colts plan.
Starting off with a win can provide a real boost mentally to the players too and another three points on Tuesday will get one or two fans thinking of a potential double league success at the end of the season.
