While speculation over whether or not the SPFL will bring the Scottish Premiership’s winter break forward rages on as a result of Covid restrictions introduced by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon which limit capacity at games to 500 – Rangers and Celtic‘s young B team stars look set to lose their chance to play their Old Firm clash in front of a massive Ibrox crowd.

The Old Firm Colts are due to go head-to-head at Ibrox on New Year’s Eve but after Sturgeon capped attendances at 500, any hopes of playing in front of a bumper Ibrox crowd look to have been killed off.

Rangers had been selling tickets in the Sandy Jardine Stand at Ibrox and were looking for a crowd of thousands when they faced their Parkhead rivals on Hogmanay.

However, that will now be capped at 500, as the youngsters lose out on what would have been the biggest game so far for many of them.

Rangers B and Celtic Colts set for entertaining tie

With both sides in free-scoring form, the Ibrox clash was set to be an entertaining clash as the Old Firm youngsters met for the first time in the Lowland League.

The game could well end up being moved back to Dumbarton, where Rangers B have played their home games this season, instead of using Ibrox for only a few hundred fans to get in.

While the restrictions are only set to be in place for three weeks, it comes right as David McCallum’s side will have been starting to look forward to the Old Firm at Ibrox – two days before the senior sides met on the other side of Glasgow.

Rangers B sit level on points in the Lowland League with their Old Firm rivals Celtic, and boast a fourteen-goal advantage, but lag ten points behind runaway leaders Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic in second place.
