Rangers B made it seven wins from eight yesterday in the Lowland League when they eased past Edinburgh University 3-0 at Peffermill and head coach David McCallum has hailed substitutes Tony Weston and Robbie Ure after the impact they had on the game.
Rangers made four changes from the side that beat Stirling Uni 5-0 in midweek and it took 20 minutes for the Colts to break the deadlock on a miserable afternoon in the capital.
Lewis MacKinnon’s strike set the Gers on their way before Alex Lowry and Cole McKinnon added their names to the scoresheet and left Rangers a single point of league leaders Bonnyrigg Rose.
McCallum was delighted with the effect his changes had on the game with both Ure and Weston having a hand in the second-half goals.
“I think both of them brought energy to the front line, the second goal comes from Robbie putting a good bit of pressure on their centre-back and getting a regain and finding his way into the box,” McCallum told Rangers TV.
“The third comes from Tony Weston lifting the ball in for Cole [McKinnon] to score. They always talk about when you come on as a substitute bring something to the game and I think they did that.”
Rangers looked much better after the break following a frustrating opening 45 and were deserved winners in the end.
The result continues the Gers’ impressive start to the season and sees them right in the hunt for top spot.
With a game in hand over Bonnyrigg – against Old Firm rivals Celtic – Rangers are back in action next weekend when they face Vale of Leithen at home.
Another three points for McCallum’s side would continue to build on their excellent early form and cement their status as one of the early title favourites this season.
