Rangers B head coach David McCallum has praised Greig Allen and Leyton Dunlop after the 16-year-olds made their competitive debuts in the Lowland League during the Colts 9-0 thrashing of Vale of Leithen.
Both players impressed for the Gers and McCallum thinks the step up ‘looked normal to them’ as the Gers blitzed Vale with a clinical performance in front of goal.
A Ross McCausland hat-trick and a strike from Arron Lyall had Rangers 4-0 up at the break before Lyall, Tony Weston, a Juan Alegria double and Lewis McKinnon added to the scoring on a fantastic afternoon for Rangers B.
With three debutants in the side – Juan Alegria also made his debut – the performance shows how well the Rangers Academy sides are working to bring players through the levels and McCallum believes that was reflected in how well the players coped.
“They have had really good reports with the under-18’s and today was an opportunity and both went on and acquitted themselves really well and it looked normal to them,” McCallum told Rangers TV.
“When you look at how we are trying to play as a B team we are trying to replicate the first-team style, the 18’s are also trying to do that to a certain degree so you can see they fitted in seamlessly.”
Next up for Rangers B is a trip to Alloa to face Broomhill as McCallum’s side look to keep the pressure on Bonnyrigg Rose at the top of the table.
Allen and Dunlop will be hoping they’ve done enough to keep their place in the side as a number of key players head out on international duty with Scotland under-19s over the coming days.
