Mark Warburton’s Glasgow Rangers are 19 points behind leaders and Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table.
Rangers assistant manager David Weir has suggested to The Scottish Sun that even spending £100 million would not be enough to catch Celtic.
Rangers are playing in the Scottish Premiership this season after winning automatic promotion from the Scottish Championship at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.
The Gers are second in the league table at the moment with 39 points from 21 matches. The Glasgow giants are 19 points behind leaders and Old Firm rivals Celtic, who have a game in hand.
Rangers are unlikely to catch Celtic at the top of the standings this season and could struggle to compete with Brendan Rodgers’s side even during the 2017-18 campaign.
Assistant manager Weir has admitted that even an investment of £100m does not guarantee that the Ibrox outfit would be able to catch Celtic.
“Rangers have been in the back-waters for the last four or five years and haven’t really invested in the squad,” Weir told The Scottish Sun.
“So how do you bridge that gap? Well unless you’re spending £100 million or whatever the figure may be — and even that doesn’t guarantee it.
“You’ve got to do it slowly, you’ve got to do it through a process and by constantly improving players, the environment, the challenges you give the players, the youth department.”
Rangers have signed Emerson Hyndman and Jon Toral on loan from Bournemouth and Arsenal respectively so far in the January transfer window.
The Gert will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Motherwell at Ibrox in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.
