Rangers will mark the club’s 150th anniversary with a special commemorative friendly against Arsenal at Ibrox later this year, the club have confirmed.
The Light Blues have a long relationship with the Gunners, going all the way back to the early part of the 20th century when the Gers came to Arsenal’s aid as they experienced serious financial trouble.
The two sides would kick off a series of friendlies in 1933, known as the ‘Game of Champions’ with the great friendship between Ibrox icon Bill Struth and Arsenal legend Herbert Chapman central to it.
Rangers even held shares in Arsenal until they were sold by loathed former Gers owner Craig Whyte in 2011.
There are current links between the two sides too with former Ibrox midfielder Mikel Arteta now manager at the Emirates while Glen Kamara is an ex-Arsenal youngster.
The Gunners will visit Ibrox on July 17, with Gers’ commercial director James Bisgrove “thrilled” to welcome Arsenal to Glasgow’s south side later this summer, saying:
“Rangers’ 150th anniversary will be a special, special year for the football club, and I am thrilled Arsenal have accepted our invitation to come to Ibrox for a very special friendly match.
“There is a rich heritage shared by the two clubs, and it is therefore fitting we should meet at the beginning of a real, milestone year for Rangers.
“With the Covid-19 situation easing, we are very hopeful we will be able to welcome a significant number of our supporters back to Ibrox to celebrate not only the club’s anniversary, but also the winning of 55 in-person too.”
