Rangers look set to be forced into fielding Joe Aribo at left-back again tomorrow when the host Aberdeen in the final game of the Premiership campaign – but Steven Gerrard has raised hopes of an appearance by Scott Arfield on trophy day.
The Gers go into tomorrow’s game with a lengthy list of injuries and suspensions with Borna Barisic “unlikely” to be involved while Fil Helander, Niko Katic and Leon Balogun join Ryan Jack on the injured list while Nathan Patterson and Calvin Bassey remain suspended.
The possible return of Arfield is a positive for the Light Blues and will ease Gerrard’s selection struggles after failing to name a full bench in recent weeks.
“Arfield is training this morning, an outside chance for Saturday,” Gerrard confirmed.
“Barisic is unlikely to feature. Other than that the team news is the same as the other day.”
With Barisic and Bassey both out, that’ll leave Aribo to fill in at left-back again and seriously restrict Gerrard’s selection options.
Going into the final game looking to avoid defeat and become the first Rangers side in over 120 years to complete a top-flight season unbeaten means there’s little room for complacency tomorrow.
Whether that means Gerrard opts for a similar XI to the one against Livingston or potentially hands a first start to someone like Leon King, the clash with Aberdeen might not have the usual end-of-season feel to it.
