Andy Halliday made his mark in Glasgow Rangers’ Old Firm win over Celtic at Ibrox last month.
Andy Halliday has told Rangers TV that he was the ‘lucky one’ for getting to set the tone against Celtic last month.
Rangers beat Brendan Rodgers’s side 1-0 to record their first Old Firm in 13 attempts and, more importantly, move level on points with the Premiership leaders.
Ibrox roared early on as Halliday beat Celtic midfielder Olivier Ntcham to a 50-50 ball, before then shouting at the Frenchman after winning the challenge.
It was a stunning example of his passion but nobody expected anything less from the Gers-daft midfielder, whose commitment never faded during the 90 minutes.
And the 27-year-old reveals that his told his team-mates to ‘leave a marker’ against Celtic before the game, before admitting that he feels fortunate to have done it.
“You’ve got to set the tone in a derby and it’s as simple as that,” he told Rangers TV.
“I said to the boys before the game if someone get the chance to leave a marker on then do it and I was the lucky one that got a chance.”
What a turnaround it’s been for Halliday at Rangers. This time last year, he had only just returned to Glasgow after a six-month loan in Azerbaijan, sanctioned by Pedro Caixinha.
The fact that he is now a big player under Steven Gerrard epitomises his hunger to succeed at his boyhood club – and his display against Celtic proved he might be sticking around for a while yet.
