Former Rangers manager Ally McCoist is reportedly interested in returning to management with Championship strugglers Sunderland.
With debts spiralling and the club facing a genuine prospect of successive relegations, there aren’t too many managers who would consider taking a sip from Sunderland’s poison chalice.
According to The Mail, however, Ally McCoist is genuinely interested in trying his hand in management again by replacing Simon Grayson on Wearside. The 55-year-old knows the club, having played in red and white between 1981 and 1983, and is close friends with chief executive Martin Bain.
And with McCoist out of work since leaving Rangers in 2014, appointing the Scotland legend would not burn a hole in Sunderland’s dwindling bank balance.
Nonetheless, this does not make the potential appointment any more attractive to a disillusioned fanbase who have seen nine managers try and fail to bring an end to the relentless crisis at the Stadium of Light in recent years.
McCoist’s managerial record, after all, is hardly stellar. Former club Rangers remain the only team he has coached from the sidelines but, after guiding the Ibrox giants back to the second tier following their 2012 demotion, he looked out of his depth and was eventually put out of his misery with The Gers stuttering in the Championship.
And it seems Sunderland fans are not too enthused by the prospect of McCoist returning to Wearside. Rangers supporters, too, have a few words of warning.
