Thomas Robert looked poised for a big move this summer, with a host of clubs interested in bringing him to Britain.

The Chronicle reported in May that Rangers and Celtic were both interested in signing Robert, whilst Newcastle United had looked at him.

The Montpellier attacker had impressed in the UEFA Youth League, and having turned down a new deal to stay in France, he looked set for a big move.

However, Robert’s new club was named today, and many have been left stunned. Third-tier Scottish side Airdrie have won the race for his signature.

That may sound like a joke, but it’s real; Aidrie confirmed the news this afternoon, branding it as a ‘sensational transfer coup’ as the Frenchman makes his move.

Robert seemingly feels that playing time is the most important thing right now, and is willing to drop into Scotland’s third tier in order to play.

It would be wise for Rangers and Celtic to keep tabs on the 19-year-old, as the winger could still prove to be a top talent right under their noses.

A move to Newcastle could have been emotional given that father Laurent Robert played for the Magpies, but The Chronicle now claim that Newcastle actually decided against signing him.

Robert will now be expected to take Scottish football by storm given the level he will be playing at, and maybe a chance to follow in his father’s footsteps will arrive in the future.
