Scottish Premiership duo Rangers and Celtic were linked with Iranian World Cup star Mohammadi – who could now join Premier League Newcastle United.
A player linked with both Rangers and Celtic could be on his way to England instead.
According to The Mail, Newcastle United have been offered the chance to sign the Iran World Cup star Milad Mohammadi on a cut price deal from Russian outfit Akhmat Grozny.
And, considering that Rafa Benitez is keen to enhance his options at full-back, signing a player who can perform on both the left and the right should appeal.
But should Mohammadi prove to be a bargain signing at St James’ Park, the Old Firm duo could be left with their head in their hands.
The Scottish Sun reported in July that Celtic and Rangers were both interested in Mohammadi. The same publication, meanwhile, claimed that Brendan Rodgers’ side had renewed their attempts to sign the 25-year-old ahead of the January transfer window.
Valued at just £2 million with his contract due to expire at the end of the season, the adventurous and attack-minded full-back wouldn’t break the bank.
Now, Celtic are crying out for a new right-back to replace Mikael Lustig and, having missed out on a whole host of alternative targets, Mohammadi joining Newcastle wouldn’t go down well with supporters.
Rangers, however, should be encouraged by Mohammadi’s ability to play on the left with recent injuries to Borna Barisic highlighting the lack of depth available to Steven Gerrard.
So with Akhmat Grozny seemingly hoping to sell this month to avoid losing their prized asset for absolutely nothing, both Celtic and Rangers should jump at the chance to renew their interest before it’s too late.
