Rangers are now looking to bring Sunderland striker Ross Stewart to Ibrox – a player who has been praised by Ibrox legend Ally McCoist.

The Gers look set to lose the Scottish Premiership title to Celtic and will need summer recruits to get back on track.

Ross Wilson is under pressure to improve the Rangers starting XI; too many of his signings have been squad fodder.

The latest target is believed to be Stewart, with The Northern Echo claiming that Rangers are in the race for the Sunderland striker.

Norwich City and Swansea City are also believed to be keen on Stewart, with Sunderland facing major interest this summer.

Stewart, a former Celtic youth player, has experience in Scottish football with Albion Rovers, St Mirren, Alloa Athletic and Ross County.

The 25-year-old target man has now hit 22 goals in all competitions this season, emerging as an outstanding goalscoring threat.

Stewart’s height – 6ft 4in – makes him a threat inside the box and you can absolutely imagine him getting on the end of James Tavernier crosses.

Sunderland would likely demand a considerable fee for Stewart; certainly more than the £300,000 Sunderland paid in 2021.

If Stewart did make the move to Ibrox, he would certainly have one fan at Ibrox in Ally McCoist.

McCoist, a Rangers hero in his playing days, spoke to The Chronicle last month about non-league players becoming stars.

McCoist named Ian Wright and Jamie Vardy as famous examples, but then named Stewart too having risen through Scottish football.

Being named in the same breath as Vardy and Wright is enormous praise for Stewart, with McCoist praising him for ‘banging in loads of goals’.

Stewart may be a different type of player to Vardy, but McCoist’s praise may leave Rangers fans feeling that the striker is worth signing.
