Rangers completed arguably the most surprising deadline day move by snapping up Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey on loan.

The Gers went into deadline day having brought in James Sands from New York City FC and Manchester United’s Amad Diallo, whilst they were also teeing up a deal for Mateusz Zukowski.

Early on deadline day, rumours emerged linking Ramsey with a stunning move to Ibrox despite Premier League interest.

This absolutely felt like one of those deadline day rumours that just has no chance of actually coming off.

Yet sure enough, Rangers confirmed the signing of Ramsey on loan until the end of the season, with a longer stay potentially in the offing.

Nobody could have seen this coming. Ramsey is a huge earner at Juventus and Premier League sides were being tipped to sign the Welshman.

Ramsey leaving Arsenal for Juventus hasn’t quite paid off, as he has only managed six goals and six assists in 70 appearances.

With only three league games under his belt this season, Ramsey has barely featured for Juventus and needed a fresh start.

Rangers can now offer that, with Ramsey surely in line for a key role in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side at Ibrox.

The challenge for Rangers will be to get Ramsey fit, with injuries a problem throughout the 31-year-old’s career.

This signing has really captured the imagination of Rangers fans though, who see this as a coup akin to that of Paul Gascoigne’s arrival.

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has now told talkSPORT that he couldn’t believe the rumours when he was told about Ramsey’s Ibrox move.

McCoist admitted that Ramsey’s arrival does mind him of Gascoigne joining, believing that he would immediately improve Rangers if fit.

“What a signing man, I couldn’t believe it,” said McCoist. “I got the word it might be on earlier on yesterday, but it was one of those ones where you’re thinking…nahhh.”

“It reminded, just watching all the footage, it reminded me a little bit of Gascoigne arriving at Ibrox all those years ago. I know he hasn’t been playing an awful lot recently, but if we get him fit and get him in that team, dear me,” he added.
