Rangers’ Allan McGregor has retired from international football.

Scotland are back in action tomorrow, taking on Kazakhstan in Astana as their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign gets underway.

Alex McLeish will be hoping to take Scotland to their first major tournament since the 1998 World Cup in France, but his plans have been dealt a blow.

Last week, Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor announced his retirement from international football, leaving Scotland to consider their options in goal.

The veteran’s decision is a blow to McLeish, but looks to be a major boost for Celtic’s Scott Bain, who should be Scotland’s first-choice stopper now.

Bain, 27, has enjoyed a dream campaign with Celtic having made his loan from Dundee permanent, supplanting Craig Gordon as the Bhoys’ first-choice goalkeeper.

Now, Bain’s season is about to get even better, as he’s the clear favourite to replace McGregor ahead of Liam Kelly and Jon McLaughlin.

Bain’s value continues to rise and rise, turning in solid, dependable performances for Celtic to now emerge as Scotland’s best option between the sticks.

It’s not often that a Rangers star will aid a Celtic player’s career, but McGregor’s retirement has presented a golden opportunity to Bain to become the undoubted first-choice for club and country.
