Alfredo Morelos can’t stop scoring for Rangers but could he really force his way into Colombia’s 2018 World Cup plans?
Alfredo Morelos has already justified his £1 million price tag (Daily Record). The prolific form that saw Morelos quickly outgrow Finnish football has continued following his move to Glasgow. Two goals in Saturday’s 4-1 thumping of Dundee took ‘El Bufalo’ to five in his first seven games for the Ibrox giants.
And the Colombian Under-20 star sees no reason why he should not be considered for full international honours with the Russia World Cup on the horizon.
“I’m growing and improving as a player and now my next aim is a place in the Colombia squad,” Morelos said in quotes reported by the Daily Record.
“I’m training well, playing well, scoring goals, Football in Scotland is aggressive and powerful. My mindset is to carry on doing the right things and wait for the call from (Colombia coach Jose Pekerman).”
Morelos’ Rangers team-mate Josh Windass sees no reason why the natural-born poacher cannot hit a 30-goal target this season (Scottish Sun) but it appears that maintaining a remarkable run of form is his only hope of booking a place on the plane next summer.
After all, Colombia, who are sitting comfortably in the South American standings and have an excellent chance of reaching the World Cup, are not short on quality forward options.
On the upside, however, Colombia’s strikeforce appears nowhere near as fearsome now as it did in their 2014 heyday. Radamel Falcao (below), who missed the Brazil World Cup, may be back to his best but Carlos Bacca, Jackson Martinez and Teo Gutierrez seem to be past their best.
Marquee Sevilla signing Luis Muriel has just one goal in 17 games for his country while Miguel Borja and Yimmi Charra, called up to the most recent squad, are yet to open their account.
Therefore, it’s not too outlandish that a Rangers player could be heading to the World Cup.
