Rangers were interested in landing Alexander Blessin last year and the German boss is now set to lose his job as Genoa boss.
The Gers are without a manager right now, but that may only be the case for a few more hours.
Rangers sacked Giovanni van Bronckhorst last week and are now closing in on appointing Michael Beale as their new manager.
What’s interesting now is that a manager Rangers considered over Van Bronckhorst has now gone the same way as the Dutchman.
Rangers were interested in landing Alexander Blessin
The Daily Record reported in November of last year that Rangers had Alexander Blessin on their radar.
It was stated that Rangers were keen on Blessin having tracked his work in charge of Belgian side Oostende.
Rangers were ultimately watching Oostende ahead of signing striker Fashion Sakala and Blessin’s approach caught their eye.
The Rangers job went to Van Bronckhorst instead and Blessin ended up securing himself a big move to Italy with Genoa.
Blessin couldn’t prevent Genoa from being relegated out of Serie A last season but he was trusted with the job of taking them back up.
This hasn’t gone to plan though and reports suggested that Sunday’s meeting with Perugia would be vital for Blessin’s future after two points in the previous three games.
Perugia – bottom of Serie B – managed to claim a 1-0 win over Genoa on Sunday and Blessin is set for the axe.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Blessin will be ‘officially fired’ after Sunday’s defeat and Genoa are moving to replace him this week.
Blessin, 49, likely won’t be out of work long having built up a strong reputation at RB Leipzig and Oostende.
Rangers liked him for a reason after all, but it looks like his sacking has come too late for him to be in the Rangers running again as Beale closes in.
