Former Rangers midfielder Charlie Adam thinks that Scotland boss Steve Clarke should have been phoning Ibrox number one Allan McGregor and trying to convince him to join his squad for this summer’s European Championship – and confessed that he thinks McGregor would have accepted if asked.

The 39-year-old has been in fantastic form this season, with many suggesting he should win Player of the Year, and Adam thinks he should be Scotland’s number one at their first major tournament since 1998.

With 21 clean sheets from 40 appearances this season, McGregor has helped the Gers to the club’s first title in a decade with a string of stunning performances between the sticks.

Adam, now plying his trade with Dundee, thinks that Clarke shouldn’t ignore the Rangers star’s form even though he retired from international duty.

“I think Steve should have phoned in up straightaway and listen, I need you in the squad and you are going to be my number one,” Adam told PLZ Soccer.

“His performances at 39 years of age have been phenomenal and in England, it has happened, they have brought players back that you would have never thought would be in the squad.

“If there is somebody like that available, can you give him in the summer an opportunity to go to the European Championship?

“I don’t think McGregor would turn it down if he was asked.”

McGregor picked up 42 caps for Scotland before deciding to withdraw from internationals in 2018.

Scotland will face Croatia, Czech Republic and England this summer as they make their return to a major competition for the first time since France 98 with Craig Gordon, David Marshall and Jon Mclaughlin likely to be picked as Clarke’s keepers.
