Steven Davis played arguably his best game yet for Rangers at the weekend.

Despite a 1-1 draw at Ibrox against Kilmarnock, Davis was a bright spot for the Gers.

Overall, Davis’ early spell at Rangers has been a bit of a disappointment. This is because expectations were too high in the first place.

He is not yet a regular starter in the side, something he hopes to change.

Davis’ performance was needed, coming at a crucial time ahead of the Old Firm fixture on March 31.

Rangers need players who are capable of stepping up, and Davis has the experience of playing in fixtures of this magnitude.

Even better, he is not taking his spot in the Rangers team for granted. He knows he needs to prove himself.

He told Rangers’ official website: “I feel I can make an impact here and it is up to me to go and show that and stake a place for a starting place in the team.

“The onus is on me, that is what I have got to go and do and show the manager I deserve it.”

Davis clearly knows that a huge performance against Celtic could seal his ascendancy to nailing down a regular starting spot at the club.

He is also hoping to clinch a permanent switch to the Gers in the summer. That should be a formality. Davis can clear up any doubt by inspiring an Old Firm win.

His display at the weekend showed he is coming into form at just the right time. A small step before a giant leap.
