A recent report suggested that Glasgow Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha was considering appointing Kenny Miller to his backroom team at Ibrox.

Kenny Miller has played down reports linking him with a role as part of Pedro Caixinha’s backroom team at Rangers and insisted that he is some way off retiring as a player, according to the Gers’ official YouTube account.

The Scottish Sun reported that Miller was seriously being considered for the role of first-team coach as Caixinha continues to put his people in place following his appointment at Ibrox.

But despite The Scottish Sun suggesting that the position would see him combine coaching with playing, the 37-year-old has suggested that talks of such a role is news to him, and he is not thinking about the next stage of his career just yet.

“Nothing to report on that,” he said, as reported by the club’s YouTube channel, when asked about the rumours.

“I’ve said all along, my focus is firmly on being a player for as long as I can.

“I don’t feel ready to hang the boots up just yet, I said you’re a long time retired, and I still feel I’ve got a lot to offer on the field at the moment, so [a backroom role] would definitely have to involve still being a player,” he added.

Based on his performances this season, it may not be that great a surprise if Miller did earn a new deal – his current contract expires this summer (via The Scottish Sun) – solely as a player.

He has scored six times in the Scottish Premiership to lead the club’s scoring charts in the top flight, and while the move from player to coach may well happen – perhaps with a combined role in between – it is surely too soon to suggest that the veteran could not still make an impact on the pitch next season.
