Glasgow Rangers are yet to see the best of Eros Grezda.
Eros Grezda arrived at Rangers billed as a player who could become a cult hero and one of the team’s most dangerous players.
Two months on Rangers fans are yet to see it, and there is some frustration at both his performances and Steven Gerrard’s reticence to use him regularly.
What needs to happen here is for expectations to be adjusted.
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard probably did not help, when he eagerly backed Grezda to excite fans, telling The Mail: “He is an excellent player and the fans will love him because he can contribute in the final third. He’s really quick, very direct and comes in with international experience.”
Grezda’s big problem is that he arrived after a summer sat on the sidelines with injury.
He missed Osijek’s Europa League qualifying campaign and their defeat to Rangers which he was unfit to play.
Not only is he still working his way back from that, but he is behind his Gers teammates, many of who took part in an intense training camp in Spain with Gerrard and his staff.
Couple that with the usual pitfalls of having to settle into a new country, it is little surprise that Grezda does not look like the player he was billed to be.
Rangers fans need to bear all of this mind, and not be too despondent if he does not look very good over the next month or so, or does not get chances.
He has to play his way back to full fitness and sharpness and it may take weeks for him to really show his best.
If expectation is adjusted that Grezda will only kick on in 2019, there’s less reason to worry. Grezda has reason to be below par so far, and if the pressure is off, it may become easier for him to produce.
