Rangers signed Brandon Barker earlier this month.

Brandon Barker of Rangers is seen during the Scottish League Cup second round match between East Fife and Rangers at Bayview Stadium on August 18, 2019 in Methil, Scotland.

Rangers made a move for Brandon Barker earlier this month, bringing in the promising winger on a permanent deal.

Normally Rangers making a move for a promising player from England’s champions Manchester City would be received with high interest.

But Gers fans are savvy enough to know that a club does not make a player, see Aaron Nemane’s ill-fated loan stint at Rangers.

Barker has had a mixed record on loan spells in his career to date, scoring just four goals in 50 appearances for Hibernian and Preston North End.

So Rangers fans are right to go into this with their eyes open, knowing this is a deal which may not work out.

The worries are partly down to the make up of Rangers’ current squad.

Rangers have a proliferation of wingers, and its very uncertain whether Barker is an upgrade.

Gers fans had been pinning their hopes of landing Ryan Kent, bringing him back from Liverpool. Barker felt a bit like a consolation.

Can it help?

Some of this may actually be to Barker’s benefit.

At both Preston and Hibs he arrived with high expectations, and it didn’t work out, with the winger only really showcasing his ability in flashes.

The calm expectation at Rangers surrounding him could help him, and make fans more appreciative when he does perform well.

Fans trust manager Steven Gerrard, and Barker is worth getting behind. Its up to him to win them over.
