Dobbie failed to play for Rangers’ senior side after coming through the system at Ibrox.
Stephen Dobbie has told Si Ferry on Open Goal’s Youtube Channel that he was tempted to join Celtic under Neil Lennon, despite coming through the system at bitter Old Firm rivals Rangers.
Dobbie, 35, is currently the country’s top scorer with a breathtaking record of 21 goals in just 14 league and cup outings for Scottish Championship side Queen of the South, who currently sit in sixth place in Scotland’s second tier.
The experienced striker, who has played for 12 different clubs in England and Britain as well as a brief loan spell to Australia while at Rangers, came through the ranks at Ibrox but failed to make a single senior appearance.
Speaking to former Celtic midfielder Ferry, Dobbie claimed that he had the chance to go to Celtic under Lennon from Crystal Palace and was tempted despite his Rangers past.
“Lenny was the Celtic manager and there was interest in me going there,” Dobbie said. “I would have gone. It is a massive club and it was a chance to return to Glasgow. At that time, it was appealing.
“But then I went to Bolton Wanderers, and I didn’t play as much as I would have liked under Lenny. He was a bit defensive – he was a holding midfielder – my number 10 role didn’t really suit it.”
Dobbie turned out for Hibernian after leaving Rangers, before going on loan and then joining St. Johnstone on a permanent basis. It was his two-year spell at Queen of the South between 2007 and 2009 which saw him move to Swansea.
Promotions with Swansea and Blackpool, as well as spells with Crystal Palace, Brighton, Fleetwood and Bolton came, before returning to Scotland in 2016 with Queen of the South where Dobbie still remains.
