Glasgow Rangers have missed out on bringing Louis Moult to Ibrox.
Rangers had been linked with signing Moult since the summer, and Moult is currently the Scottish Premiership’s top scorer.
The fact Rangers are without a manager still surely did not help the Gers, but another factor which did not help them is how they created Preston’s need to sign Moult in the first place.
This was in 2016, when the Gers paid £1.8 million to Preston to sign Joe Garner.
Garner struggled at Rangers and never really won over the fans, and was sold this summer to Ipswich, where he has re-discovered his form.
Preston did not effectively replace Garner, instead switching Jordan Hugill into a forward role, and relying on wingers or loanee to score goals.
Moult is a proper solution for the squad gap first caused by Rangers raid on Garner over a year ago. Call this Preston’s revenge for luring their fan favourite away from Deepdale.
Rangers’ set up their failure to sign the striker by signing Garner, but they must also look at themselves for their summer transfer business, when they had an opportunity to bring Moult in.
The Scottish Sun reported that Pedro Caixinha was keen to sign Moult, and the combination of circumstance and their own hesitation has combined for them to miss out on the most obvious potential signing they could have made.
