Rangers suffered one of their worst defeats in recent history on Saturday afternoon. The Gers went down 5-1 to Old Firm rivals Celtic at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic were favourites heading into the match and the win does not come as a surprise. What did come as a surprise was the manner in which Rangers were hammered.

The Gers have shown signs of improvements under new manager Pedro Caixinha in recent weeks, but on Saturday afternoon, the Ibrox outfit simply failed to be anywhere near half as good as Celtic were.

The 5-1 defeat shows just how far behind Celtic Rangers are, and it is hard to see the Gers closing that gap next season.

Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie was following the match, and his post on Twitter after the game sums up the current situation regarding the Gers and the Bhoys.

Rangers have some good players, such as Kenny Miller, but it is clear that they need to make new signings in the summer transfer window.

It may not be possible for the Gers to catch Celtic next season, but they should do all they can to close the gap and finish second in 2017-18.
