Rangers have been linked with a striker who could replicate the Celtic youngster’s start to life in Scotland.

According to a recent report from the Sun, Rangers are planning a move for West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino, with the Gers said to have already made contact with the player about a summer switch.

Berahino would be a free agent then, with his contract at The Hawthorns expiring this summer, and the Sun claims Rangers – or any Scottish club for that matter – would only have to pay around £500,000 in compensation.

While more sceptical Rangers fans may be quick to dismiss the story, with Berahino likely to have plenty of suitors in the Premier League alone, it is not beyond the realms of possibility.

In fact, it was not long ago that Moussa Dembele was generating a raft of headlines as his Fulham contract ticked down and it was Celtic that ultimately got their man in what proved to be a mammoth coup.

Now Rangers have the chance to hit back – and claw back some ground on their fierce rivals in the process – by signing a striker who could be just as effective as the Bhoys youngster.

Berahino’s career may have gone off the rails in recent times but there is no doubting his innate talent and the 23-year-old could score a hatful if he replicates his best form at Ibrox.

Rangers manager Mark Warburton will know there is plenty of work to do before his side is challenging Celtic for silverware, but the addition of a striker with skill in abundance and a point to prove would go down a storm in Scotland.

Celtic did it last summer with Dembele – who most expected would end up at Tottenham Hotspur – so why not Rangers this rime round?

After all, it would make one hell of a round two as the two sides continue their battle in the Scottish Premiership.
