Ramon Vega has been quoted by the Daily Record defending Glasgow Rangers defender Philippe Senderos.

Senderos has been heavily criticised at Rangers, after making a woeful start to his career at Ibrox.

Mark Warburton snapped Senderos up on a free transfer over the summer, but the powerful centre-back has not won many admirers in Glasgow.

Senderos could not have made a worse introduction to Rangers supporters, as he was sent off during his debut, which happened to come against Celtic.

Rangers went on to lose the Old-Firm derby 5-1 in humiliating fashion, and Senders has only played once for the Light Blues since.

However, Vega believes that Senderos still has the quality to come good at Ibrox, if Rangers fans forgive him.

“Don’t forget he has played for big teams in major European leagues,” the former Celtic defender said. “He has big experience at international level. He does have ability.

“I’m sure Rangers will do all they can to help him. I’m hoping he does have the mental strength to get over the Celtic game.

“There would have been less attention on him had he been sent off against a Kilmarnock or a Dundee.

“Unfortunately, for him, it was against Celtic at Celtic Park in front of 60,000 people. That puts it into a different perspective. The media and the fans will not let him forget about it.”

Senderos’ future at Rangers already looks uncertain, with the January transfer window drawing closer.

The experienced centre-back is one of a number of Rangers’ summer signings who have not made an immediate impact for Warburton’s side.

The Light Blues currently sit in third place in the Scottish Premiership standings, after a disappointing opening to the campaign.
