Rangers defender James Maxwell is now wanted at Leeds United after impressing on loan away from Ibrox this season.

The Daily Mail claim that Maxwell is on Leeds’ radar because they want a young left back to play in their under-23’s.

Junior Firpo hasn’t excelled in the first team, so maybe Leeds feel they need to have a young left back to develop behind him.

Maxwell is the current pick for Leeds, with the Whites seemingly impressed with his performances away from Rangers.

Formerly of Falkirk, Maxwell has been coming up through the Rangers ranks since 2019.

With little chance of first-team football this season, Rangers sent Maxwell on loan to Ayr United in Scotland’s second tier.

In 17 league games, Maxwell has one goal and three assists – a very impressive attacking output.

With Calvin Bassey playing as a centre back under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, maybe Rangers would like Maxwell to be Borna Barisic’s competition moving forward.

That would mean fending off Leeds, who have been active in terms of Under-23 recruitment and, on occasion, in Scotland.

Leo Hjelde joined from Celtic last summer whilst Stuart McKinstry arrived from Motherwell.

Signing Maxwell would continue that trend for Leeds, but surely Rangers won’t give Maxwell up easily.
