Christian Eriksen’s long-term future at Tottenham Hotspur remains up in the air.

Rafael van der Vaart has admitted on Sky Sports that he has no idea why Tottenham Hotspur would consider selling Christian Eriksen.

Spurs kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 3-1 win over Aston Villa in North London on Saturday in a game that Eriksen directly influenced.

Tottenham were losing when Mauricio Pochettino introduced the linked-away Denmark international with 25 minutes to go, but the reported Real Madrid target had a stunning impact for the hosts.

Eriksen’s role with the Lilywhites is in doubt after a deadline-day deal for Giovani Lo Celso.

His move to Manchester United didn’t materialise, but the transfer window remains open for a number of European countries and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the 27-year-old – out of contract next summer – did leave Pochettino’s side.

But the Dutch legend is a big fan and warns that his former club have a ‘big problem’ if Eriksen is allowed to leave.

He told Sky Sports: “We paying £60m for a midfielder and we miss Eriksen. I don’t understand. We need to enjoy players like Eriksen. I hope he is going to stay because if he leaves, Spurs have a big problem.”

Spurs are reported to have offered Eriksen a new deal worth £160,000 per week [The Daily Mail], but time will tell if he wants it.
