Newcastle United are set to be without DeAndre Yedlin this weekend.

Rafael Benitez has suggested in the Chronicle that Newcastle United full-back DeAndre Yedlin’s injury may be worse than first feared.

Yedlin was only expected to miss a short period of time when he first picked up a thigh injury.

However, the American international was forced to sit out of Newcastle’s last match against Fulham and his recovery has not gone as smoothly as hoped.

Newcastle are now waiting for the seriousness of the injury to be assessed again.

And Benitez has hinted that Yedlin could be out for a lengthy period of time.

“We don’t know. We are waiting for a second opinion,” the Spanish boss admitted.

“We thought it wasn’t too bad but we will have to analyse carefully what is going on and then decide.

“I think it’s too soon. Next week we may have more information.”

Yedlin’s absence is a blow for Newcastle, as he has been in exceptional form this season.

Jesus Gamez is likely to replace the former Tottenham Hotspur man, while he is sidelined with injury.

Newcastle’s next match comes against struggling Birmingham City at St. Andrew’s at the weekend.
