Newcastle United need reinforcements during the January transfer window.
Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has told the Shields Gazette that he has no idea what the January transfer window holds for the club.
The Magpies suffered defeat at Chelsea on Saturday afternoon, as whilst Dwight Gayle gave Newcastle the lead, two goals from Eden Hazard and a strike from Alvaro Morata handed the Blues a 3-1 win.
That means it’s now five defeats in six for Newcastle, with just one point picked up in that run, which came in the 2-2 draw at West Bromwich Albion in midweek – and even then, Newcastle had to come from two goals down.
Newcastle’s form of late has been a major concern, and they lie five points clear of the relegation zone as Benitez looks to avoid any sort of battle against the drop this season.
Benitez was left frustrated over the summer with regards to transfers, and whilst fans are hoping for big additions in January, they may end up being left just as frustrated as their manager.
Benitez was asked by the Shields Gazette whether January would be an important month, and whether it depended on the club’s takeover saga – and he offered a deflating response, simply stating ‘I have no idea’.
With Mike Ashley attempting to sell the club, but talks with Amanda Staveley and the PCP Capital Partners at a standstill, talks over the takeover could now head into 2018.
Ashley is unlikely to invest huge money on new signings in January if he intends to sell the club, but with no fresh investment on the horizon, confusion reigns at St. James’ Park less than a month away from the transfer window – and Benitez’s comments just sum up the mood on Tyneside right now.
