Rafael Benitez is reportedly trying to sign Jonny Evans for Newcastle United, only months after Alan Pardew admitted to the Chronicle that he tried to bring in the Northern Irish centre-back on two separate occasions.

Pardew was a big fan of Evans, and he wanted him to join him at Newcastle.

However, Pardew was unable to get a deal over the line. He said, days after taking over at West Brom: “There was a spell at Newcastle where I looked at Jonny for a while. He will certainly stay as captain [of West Brom].

“A couple of times in my career I have tried to sign Jonny Evans and he probably knew that so that helped him.”

Rafael Benitez will now try to succeed where Pardew failed, by bringing Evans to St. James’ Park in the summer.

The Daily Mirror claim that Newcastle are looking to seal a bargain deal for the defender once West Brom’s relegation is confirmed.

West Bromwich Albion Football Club player Jonny Evans attends a press conference in Hong Kong on July 18, 2017, ahead of the 2017 Premier League Asia Trophy being played on July 19 and 22.

Evans has a £3 million release clause in his contract, which is making him a target for a number of Premier League clubs.

If Newcastle were to snap him up, he would add experience and depth to their defence.

Evans would be in competition with the likes of Florian Lejeune and Jamaal Lascelles for a first-team place.
