Rafael Benitez has claimed that the only positive that came from Newcastle United’s disappointing defeat to Huddersfield Town was the support the home side got inside St James’ Park, the Shields Gazette reports.
The Magpies were playing their first league game in front of their own fans since relegation and the incredible atmosphere that was generated on the final day of last season when supporters tried – and ultimately succeeded in – convincing Benitez to stay on as manager.

And while they were unable to replicate the incredible 5-1 victory over Tottenham against the Terriers, as David Wagner’s men came away with a 2-1 win, the Spaniard suggested that the level of support was reminiscent of that day.
“Today the only positive was the fans,” he simply told the Shields Gazette.

Although the result was less than ideal, the supporters will still surely be optimistic about their season.
As well as having a Champions League-winning manager at the helm, they managed to make several high-profile signings over the summer, and once they gel as a side, it will surely not be long before they are in contention for the promotion spots in the division, and Benitez is able to suggest more than one positive to come out of a game.
