Achraf Lazaar’s move from Newcastle United to Genoa reportedly broke down.
According to The Chronicle, Lazaar’s move from Newcastle to Serie A side Genoa broke down on transfer deadline day in Italy.
It has been reported that Genoa were reluctant to place a buyout clause in the loan deal for the 26-year-old left-back.
Newcastle manager Benitez, though, has suggested that the Morocco international defender could still leave this summer.
When asked if he would consider using Lazaar if he stayed at Newcastle, Benitez told The Chronicle: “We will see. It is too early. The transfer windows are still open elsewhere.”
Exit makes sense
Lazaar has been on the books of Newcastle since the summer of 2016 when he joined from Italian Palermo.
The 26-year-old left-back has failed to make an impact at St. James’ Park and was able to play just 37 minutes in the Championship during the 2016-17 campaign, according to WhoScored.
The Morocco international defender spent the 2017-18 season on loan at Benevento in Italy, making six starts and three substitute appearances in Serie A in the process, according to WhoScored.
With Newcastle manager Benitez clearly not considering Lazaar good enough, it would make sense for him to leave the club before the summer transfer window closes this month.
